Collaboration

Working Together

Together, researchers at Argonne, the University of Chicago, and other institutions work toward tackling some of the most challenging issues of our time. Joint initiatives leverage intellectual and technical resources at Argonne, Fermilab, and the University of Chicago to develop science with meaningful applications. A few of these collaborations are listed below.

Chicago Quantum Exchange

The Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE) is an intellectual hub and partnership for advancing academic and industrial efforts in the science and engineering of quantum information. Members of CQE are focused on developing new ways of understanding and exploiting the laws of quantum mechanics, the fundamental yet counterintuitive theory that governs nature at its smallest scales. The overarching goal is to apply research innovations to develop radically new types of devices, materials, and computing techniques. Based at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, CQE catalyzes research activity across disciplines and member institutions. It is anchored by the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and includes the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Northwestern University, and industry partners. Energy Policy Institute at Chicago

The Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) is contributing solutions using a unique approach that translates cutting-edge research into real-world impacts through strategic outreach, and training for the next generation of global energy leaders. EPIC uses a cross-cutting approach that links the University of Chicago’s renowned economists with leading thinkers in policy and law, business, big data, engineering and natural and physical sciences throughout the University and at partner institutes such as the Marine Biological Lab and Argonne National Laboratory. By leveraging these University partners and harnessing top talent with varied expertise, EPIC is tackling the world’s toughest energy problems. Learn more

Pritzker School for Molecular Engineering

The Pritzker School for Molecular Engineering (PME)  integrates science and engineering to address global challenges from the molecular level up. Work at PME applies molecular-level science to the design of advanced devices, processes, and technologies. Organized by interdisciplinary research themes, PME researchers aim to develop solutions to urgent societal problems, such as water and energy resources, information security, and human health.

The Microbiome Center

The Microbiome Center brings together a vast array of researchers and scientists to examine the microbial communities that shape our world. In this rapidly expanding field, the Microbiome Center strives to catalyze the discoveries of microbial impact; helping scientists quickly translate their findings and position them for material use.

South Pole Telescope

Argonne, Fermilab and the University of Chicago are part of a collaboration that operates a 10-meter telescope dedicated to studying the oldest light in the universe, the cosmic microwave background, or CMB, which can help us understand the earliest moments of the universe. Argonne and the other Chicago-area institutions worked together to build a new, ultra-sensitive camera for the telescope, containing 16,000 specially manufactured detectors. Learn more

UChicago Consortium for Advanced Science and Engineering (UChicago CASE)

The University of Chicago Consortium for Advanced Science and Engineering (UChicago CASE) expands research collaborations between UChicago faculty and scientists and scholars at affiliated institutions, including Argonne, Fermilab and the Marine Biological Laboratory, in a broad range of research areas, including biological, computational, physical and social sciences, engineering and public policy.
