Elizabeth Shanin serves as interim vice president and general counsel for the University of Chicago. In this role, Shanin leads the University’s Office of Legal Counsel, which advises and represents all units of the University including U.S. and international affiliates. She also represents the University in its role as contract operator to the Department of Energy for the management and operation of the Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory.
Shanin joined the Office of Legal Counsel in 2007, and was a Senior Associate General Counsel prior to her current appointment. Before coming to the University, Shanin clerked for the Honorable Amy J. St. Eve in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and worked as an attorney at the law firm of Sidley Austin LLP.
Shanin received her BA from Washington University in St. Louis, and her JD from the University of Chicago.
